Media release on behalf of Robert’s family post-sentencing 2010.
On Behalf of Robert Farquharson, his family, friends and supporters.
Robert Farquharson is innocent.
We as his family and supporters are not so blinded by love or sympathy that we would maintain his innocence if there was any evidence of guilt. Many of us are family of Jai, Tyler and Bailey and it is unthinkable that we would allow or ignore any deliberate harm coming to them or that anyone would believe that we could.
Rob is a broken man, a traumatized and deeply grieving parent who loves his children. He finds it difficult to accept the deaths of his boys and will carry this grief with him forever. His grieving process has been complicated by the added trauma from accusations, trials and imprisonment, and because of this he has been labeled ‘emotionless’. His observed and much reported behaviour is acknowledged by professionals as well within the normal range expected of someone in this situation. Those who have never experienced what he has cannot judge him – walk a mile in his shoes and see how you would behave.
Rob was never likely to receive a fair trial, because any potential jury had been deeply influenced by emotive and selective reporting from the media. Rob and his family have been distressed for five years by these reports and the ongoing distorted public opinion and reaction. Despite the fact that it is hard to accept, this was an accident.
We are both devastated and outraged at the verdict. Although previously respecting the legal system, we have experienced first-hand that it is far from perfect and innocent people are convicted.
The justice system is only as good as the honesty and integrity of the people who participate. We have no doubts about the honesty and integrity of those involved in Rob’s defense, including Rob himself. However the case against Rob has been built on tunnel vision assuming his guilt from the outset of investigation. It is created from deliberate manipulation of circumstantial evidence.
The justice system has failed three young boys and their loving father and we are horrified that Rob is now faced with further trauma, grief and loss of liberty as a result. We feel deeply for his pain and suffering and the fact that this is caused by a failure of the system meant to protect the innocent. This verdict and sentence affects all of us and we await the day that justice prevails and this brutally wronged father of three special boys, walks free. We hope and pray that he can then find a way to recover from this ordeal and live with his grief. We are here to ensure this happens and offer him all the support he fully deserves.
We appeal for anyone with useful information or offers of support to contact Rob’s legal team.
